CASTLEGAR – The BC Wildfire Service is supporting BC Parks in conducting eight spot sized research-specific prescribed burns. Burning will take place in several sites in Kikomun Creek Provincial Park, located west of Baynes Lake on Lake Koocanusa, about nine kilometres south of Jaffray.
While the exact timing of this burn will depend on weather and site conditions, it could begin as early as Wednesday, March 27, 2024.
Smoke may impact residents near the burn area and may be visible from Baynes Lake, Jaffray, Lake Koocanusa, and surrounding areas. Smoke may also be visible to people traveling along Highway 3 and Highway 93. Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable to achieve research objectives. Light smoke may linger in the following days.
To better guide land management decisions in Kikomun Creek Provincial Park and allow native plant species to thrive, BC Parks has identified the need to gather site-specific information on the effect of low-intensity spring burning on the invasive plant species St. John’s wort and sulphur cinquefoil.
